Fall Fashion Trends

EMBELLISHMENT IS THE KEY WORD FOR THE SEASON! In other words; pin a flower on it, tack sequins on it, put lace on it . . . add something!

To the knee boots: plain & flat; embellished with buckles & high heeled; big, wooly après ski; short (ankle or slightly above) with high heels; cowgirl with fancy detailing. These are the boots of winter.
Black IS the new black! Camel is the new neutral. Purple is HUGE! Other jewel tones are also very popular. Think Renaissance, Russian and Gothic when choosing your color spectrum. This includes nails polish, by the way.
Fur is still acceptable (forgive us PETA). Long haired and broadtail are the BEST.
Metallic is everywhere...in fabrics, bags, shoes. Bronze, pewter…it’s what is happening.
Renaissance, Russian and Gothic are the strongest influences. Embroidery, jewel tones, ruffles, brocades, dark reds/burgundy/purple. A Gothic trend again but modest and feminine.
SHOES – Heels high to kitten; flats from ballet shoes to boots. Toes – pointed, squared off and the very rounded ones they’ve been promising us for a year! Ballet flats are adorned with pom-poms, flowers, embroidery and more. One important look is the high heeled loafer…fringed, tasseled, sometimes wedged. For evening, open toed and embellished—often velvet.
Purses – a lot going on! Buckles, hardware, embroidery, flowers, metallic…very busy. Clutches oversized (I mean OVERSIZED) and hang on the arm bags. Not many shoulder bags. Some plain leather two-handle bags—but EXPENSIVE…Hermes, Prada, Vuitton. Most purses are FRAMED this season—not slouchy, hobo types as before.
Short jacket and sweaters…to the waist at the most!
Jeans - The (it won’t go away) low, low rise jeans. They only fit those under 30 and some of us have to find other solutions. Coldwater Creek and Lees offer  options.
Pants - Low rise with small pleats (think Katharine Hepburn) or above waist with BIG legs or waist high both flat front and single pleat. There are very large legs (many with cuffs) or very narrow…it’s up to you and your body type! Pants and jeans are worn tucked inside knee high boots as casual wear and out over the boots for office/everyday wear.
Legs will be covered with opaque tights or patterned hose. Leggings (think Jane Fonda’s ‘80s exercise gear) are also back to wear with short skirts. (Those of us over 50 should ignore this trend!)
Jewelry is antique, gold, green & dark red and BIG. Chandelier earrings are still here, drop earrings are very good. There are no "button earrings."  Chain link and charm necklaces are popular, especially with "a cause."  Lots of bangle bracelets, the bigger the better!

What can I do with . . .

There comes a time in the life of any possession when it’s no longer usable as is. And that’s the time to get creative! Some ideas for what you can do with:

Extra buttons: Trim a pillow, napkins, or cafe curtains for a "cute as a button" accessory!
An odd belt
: Hung from a hook, a belt makes a wonderful barrette holder.
Single pierced earring
: Besides becoming a lapel pin or beret accent, a single earring will also make a cute push-pin on your bulletin board.
Outgrown
souvenir T-shirts make a wonderful quilt, with the printed areas reminding a child of past trips and sports team allegiances.
Baby clothes
can dress a teddy bear or doll in "memorable" outfits.
Worn-out jean cutoffs
can be stuffed for throw pillows. Try snagged or run pantyhose for the stuffing.
And then of course there’s the old stand-by, a cast-off dress shirt as a child’s craft smock. Make it special with fabric paints or pens!

Buying A Winter Coat That Truly Fits

Whether you're looking to update your coat collection on your own this season or plan to put one or two styles on your holiday "wish list," we thought you'd appreciate the following tips on how to purchase a coat that truly fits.

The Hug Test: Button up the coat or jacket and hug yourself. If the fabric strains too much, the coat probably doesn't fit.
Steering Wheel Test: Pretend you are driving a car. There should be enough movement to comfortably steer the wheel.

Jump Rope Test: Pretend to jump rope. There should be enough room for your shoulders to swing freely.
Sleeve Length: Sleeves should cover the wrist bone, but not the back of your hand.

Pockets: Don't forget to make sure the pockets aren't set too low or too high. Pockets should be set at a comfortable height in order to be useful while at the same time not interfering with the balance of your overall silhouette.
