Resale... The Best Gift Shopping Secret

Savvy shoppers see resale as their best shopping secret. They get quality, interesting, "road tested" gifts at a fraction of the price they would pay at a regular store, even on sale. The attraction is twofold: you can give something unique and save a lot of money. Shopping at not-for-profit thrift stores—where profits go to fund charitable works—has the added benefit of helping a good cause.

Here are some tips for holiday shopping... resale style:

Make A Plan - a good plan starts with a list of who you are buying gifts for and if possible an idea of what you have in mind for each person.

Allow Time for Browsing - resale and thrift shops for full of interesting treasures, often what you least expect to find. Leisurely browsing can reward you with the perfect gift for someone on your list.

Make it Meaningful - the heart of gift giving is knowing what people will value. Is someone on your list a cat or dog lover? Then look for that animal themed gift.  Is there a new Mom on your list? Look for a unique picture frame for her baby photos.

Think "Gifts" All Year - resale and thrift shops have a constant influx of new, interesting merchandise. Keep your eyes open for perfect gifts all year long and ease the pressure of holiday shopping.

Don't Rule Out Gift Cards - most NARTS member stores sell gift certificates or gift cards. What better treat for your fellow savvy shopper friends than a shopping spree in their favorite resale or consignment shop.  While you are buying those gift cards, look for a wallet to present them in.

Dress to Impress - attractive packaging makes a statement. Look for a beautiful pin or charm to replace or attach to a bow.  Buy unique baskets and put them aside to use as containers for special gifts.

Make Your Own Gifts - then search your favorite resale and thrifts shops for beautiful pieces of glassware or ceramic to "wrap" those homemade goodies in.

Think Outside the Box - look for alternative, unique gifts. Instead of traditional toys, consider a gift package of "dress-up" clothes for that little girl on your list. Resale and thrift shops have prom dresses that make wonderful dress-up outfits when accessorized with jewelry, gloves, high heels, etc. - all of which can be readily found in your favorite shop.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on the perfect gift... you just have to know where to shop!
