Not Sure What the Difference Is?
Although consignment, resale, and thrift stores all sell previously owned items, the way those items arrive at the store is different.
Consignment Stores
You bring items to the store, and the store selects what it believes it can sell. The store displays, markets, and sells the accepted items for you. After an item sells, you receive an agreed upon percentage of the selling price.

Each store sets its own consignment period, pricing, markdown schedule, and payment policy. Some stores accept items by appointment, while others offer designated drop off times.
Resale Stores
You bring items to the store for review. The store chooses what it wants to purchase and makes you an offer based on factors such as condition, brand, style, demand, and current inventory.
If you accept the offer, you’re usually paid right away in cash, store credit, or another form of payment offered by the store. The store then owns the items and decides how they will be priced and sold.
Thrift Stores
You donate items to the store without receiving payment. The store sorts, prices, and sells the items to new owners. Because donations arrive regularly, the selection changes often and may include clothing, household goods, furniture, books, and other everyday finds.
Many thrift stores are operated by nonprofit organizations or use their proceeds to support charitable programs and community services. Donation guidelines vary, so it’s always wise to check what the store currently accepts before loading the car.
